I am Samantha.
I was born in 2002 without my left hand.
My parents found out about this condition during an ultrasound when my mom was 23 weeks pregnant. At that point my Mom began researching and connecting with others who were or had already gone through a pregnancy with a limb different child.
Just before I was born, my Mom created a Yahoo Group for families and people affected by limb differences. It was named, Sammy’s Friends. It was through that group my parents gained insight on how to best raise me to become the confident young woman I am today.
My rodeo career is in it’s youth right now. I have been riding horses since I was 5 years old, but just recently started to compete.
Despite my parents urging, I have always been a shy child. Extremely shy.
I am slowly coming out of it, as more and more people accept me as I am. Competing has given me confidence as well. I am proving to myself that I am able to do anything, and do it just as well as my two handed competitors.
I must give all due credit to my trainer Dawn at Red Dog Ranch. She started training me at the age of 7, when she approached my Dad and told him she could make me a barrel racer! She believed in me, and has had so much patience with me. I call her my second Mom because she has earned that much love and respect from me! I don’t know what I would do without her.
Currently I am competing in Barrel Racing, Pole Bending, Single Stake, and Goat Tying. I am working on Roping as well! I appreciate all the encouragement I can get, and I truly hope my success (and failures too) inspire others to keep trying. Anything is possible with enough practice and determination.
